If your organization currently owns System Center Configuration Manager (SCCM), then you also now own Intune for PC management! Please be aware that if you own Intune, then you also automatically get SCCM for desktops. This does not include mobile device management.

Read on to learn how best to optimize your usage of MECM and take advantage of this great pairing...

What is Microsoft Endpoint Configuration Manager (MECM)?

Microsoft has brought together Configuration Manager and Intune for PC management with simplified licensing. This allows the deployment of a seamless, end-to-end management solution that combines the functionality, data, and new intelligent actions of Microsoft Intune and Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager (SCCM). MECM provides modern management and security that meets customers where they are and helps them move to the cloud. Microsoft has also included different management solutions to be included in the Microsoft Endpoint Manager brand.

This secure, integrated management solution includes:

  • Cloud-powered intelligence through management solutions such as Intune and Desktop Analytics
  • Optimized for the Microsoft 365 stack – Manage devices with an integrated and optimized solution through cloud-powered security controls.
    • Fully integrated security and identity – Use Conditional Access with Intune to control the devices and applications that can connect to your email and company resources
  • Almost all devices and applications

How is Microsoft Endpoint Manager integrated?

Microsoft Endpoint Manager integrates a variety of solutions for managing devices. The following Microsoft management solutions are now part of the Microsoft Endpoint Manager Brand:

  • Intune: A cloud-based service for enterprise mobility management. MECM allows organizations to manage PCs with Intune client software. If you own Intune, then you now also own SCCM. Please note, if you originally owned SCCM, then you will receive PC management from Intune – but not mobile management. Intune enables organizations to offer a secure bring-your-own-device (BYOD) or personal device program to all employees. Intune provides security by managing devices to make sure the right people have access to the right data and protect your organization’s information by helping to control the way your workforce accesses and shares it. Additionally, Intune ensures devices and applications are compliant with company security requirements.
  • Autopilot: Cloud-based technologies that are used to set up and pre-configure new devices within an organization without having to route the PC to use the IP deployment first.
  • Desktop Analytics: Provides insights and intelligence for you to make more informed decisions about the update readiness of your Windows clients. It combines data from your organization with data aggregated from millions of devices connected to Microsoft Cloud services. This is beneficial to predict potential issues and suggests potential mitigations.

The new 1910 version of SCCM is a part of MECM, through simplified licensing. This allows organizations to continue to make use of existing Configuration Manager investments, while also taking advantage of the power of the Microsoft Cloud. This update brings a handful of new features/improvements, including:

  • Application Management: This allows Microsoft Edge to automatically update the version of the client on the end user’s device.
  • Client Management: Include custom configuration baselines as part of a compliance policy assessment. Also, enable user policy for Windows 10 Enterprise multi-session (multiple concurrent interactive sessions).
  • Software Updates
  • Office 365 ProPlus Pilot and Health Dashboard: This provides health insights for devices with ProPlus to help identify possible issues that might affect your deployment plans.
  • Protection: Such as BitLocker management, which seeks to eliminate the need for IT admins to set management policies using tools or other mechanisms by having Windows perform tasks that are more practical to automate.
