Windows Virtual Desktop: Meeting the Growing Need of the Remote Workforce

The yearlong COVID-19 pandemic has upended business operations in nearly all industries...

As states imposed lockdowns, more businesses were forced to move to a work-from-home arrangement. Although the transition to a remote workforce has been in process for a number of years, the impact of COVID-19 has dramatically accelerated the trend.

To meet this new reality, businesses are rethinking their IT infrastructures. One of the major investments businesses are making is in the area of virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI). According to one recent survey, nearly half of all respondents said they plan to implement VDI technology within the next two years.1

VDI allows an endpoint device to connect with an organization’s system and applications via a network in the same way as if the user was connecting locally. The growth of cloud deployments and the rapid changes in the way people work has significantly contributed to the growing adoption of VDI technology.

Microsoft has aggressively entered the VDI space with its Windows Virtual Desktop (WVD) on Azure, an offering that some believe will dramatically impact the world of end-user computing. WVD is the only VDI that delivers simplified management, multi-session Windows 10, optimizations for Office 365 ProPlus, and support for Remote Desktop Services (RDS).

WVD offers a host of benefits including allowing multiple concurrent end-users to connect using Windows 10 as a remote desktop session host server, using Azure’s diagnostics service to troubleshoot errors, and simplifying governance and device management through user management and identity, network policies, image app, and profile management.

Microsoft’s WVD service has a number of valuable use cases such as creating a full virtualization environment with Desktop-as-a-Service, replacing RDS to get a familiar Windows 10 experience, and replacing the more expensive, less accessible Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops solution.
