Are You Ready for the Cloud? Are You Sure?

Microsoft has come out with a great assessment tool that helps you determine if you are ready for the cloud or is virtualization still the name of the game for you.  It is an 11 question survey that allows you to answer on a sliding scale of IT sophistication.  By putting in a more exact answer in the scale, the output is better customized that most of these type of tools that I have seen previously.  Plus, it doesn’t always tell you that the Microsoft Cloud is the best choice.  Many times it will indicate that on premise solutions could still be the best fit for the client.

I heard there was a send restriction in place for e-mail. Can you comment on this?

The default outgoing mail size is 10MB.  It can be increased easily to 25MB per mail.  Other limits include 500 recipients per message, or 1,500 recipients per 24-hour period, but distribution groups are counted as a single recipient.

What Is the Most Noticeable Impact to Our Users?

The most noticeable impact occurs when sending a large file from one user to another in the same office, while they are waiting for it.  This large file needs to traverse out to the Office 365 servers and back.  Now, realistically in most cases we are talking seconds here for this process.  Sometimes you can’t wait – when you need instant speed to collaborate on a document, we typically recommending using Lync and sharing screens for access in real-time.

What, if any, are the restrictions of Office 365 and Macintosh?

Microsoft Office 365 for enterprises is compatible with Microsoft Office for Mac 2011 Service Pack 1 or a later version, and Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac 12.2.9 Update or a later version. If you use Office 2008 for Mac 12.2.9 Update or a later version, you must also install Microsoft Entourage 2008 for Mac, Web Services Edition.

    • - Manage messages, tasks, contacts, and calendars by using Microsoft Outlook for Mac 2011, Entourage 2008, Web Services Edition, or Microsoft Outlook Web App.

    • - Open, edit, and save documents that are located on a SharePoint site by using Office 2008 for Mac and Document Connection.


- Participate in online meetings by using the Microsoft Lync Web App.
